Should I Get a Dartboard?
Many people have grown up with a dartboard in their basement or games room. It’s an affordable, accessible game that’s easy to learn and fun for all skill levels.
Dartboards don’t take up much space since they hang on a wall. The official throwing distance is 7ft 9¼ in, so only a small amount of floor space is needed for a proper setup.
Is It Safe for Kids?
Whether a traditional steel-tip dartboard is right for your family depends on the level of supervision available. Darts can be dangerous if not handled properly, especially by younger children.
For families concerned about safety, there are safer alternatives such as magnetic dart sets. These use darts with no sharp points, making them a great kid-friendly option.
What About My Walls?
Even experienced players miss the board occasionally, so it’s wise to plan for stray darts.
Try to hang your dartboard away from artwork, electronics such as TVs, and windows. While a dartboard cabinet provides some protection, an open-face surround offers more coverage, protecting the wall around the board within roughly a 30" x 30" area.
You can also protect your floors by placing a dart mat along the throwing line.
What Else Do I Need to Get Started?
Darts is one of the most affordable games you can add to your home. All you need is a dartboard and a set of darts.
However, having at least two sets of darts allows multiple players to enjoy the game together. It’s also helpful to keep spare parts like shafts and flights on hand in case of damage.
For the best experience, consider adding a dartboard light. A ring light eliminates shadows and makes every shot easier to see.
Optional upgrades include:
- A chalkboard or whiteboard for scoring
- A tablet holder for online scoring apps
- A camera for playing remotely with friends
